Yumeji Takehisa (1884 - 1934)
Painter and poet Yumeji Takehisa was born in Setouchi, Japan. Having limited success as a poet he began to draw pictures in the traditional Nihonga style (using traditional Japanese techniques and materials). Takehisha didn’t have any formal artistic training and was self-taught. He did not want to be part of or connected to the elitist artist culture that was prevalent in Japan at this time. His art was affordable and his themes focused on daily life. He was a revolutionary designer of his time and gained great popularity among ordinary people.
